Hello, please let us introduce ourselves. We are Randy & Karen Basi, owners of A.W. Shucks Cocktail & Oyster Bar since July of 2023. At the heart of our journey to owning A. W. Shucks is a shared passion for seafood, community and being in a place where people enjoy great food and good company.
From the moment we stepped into this small but vibrant and charismatic little town of Carmel By-The-Sea more than 30 years ago, we instantly knew this was a special place. After several visits, we decided someday we would own a home here. Fast forward 12 years in 2005 that “Someday Came” and soon we became locals and regulars at our favorite place: A.W. Shucks Cocktail & Oyster Bar.
Why A.W. Shucks? Because consistently, we were greeted by the most
welcoming and friendly staff and given a menu showcasing an
array of fresh and delicious dining choices including several
seafood and traditional starters, salads and combination platters.
We especially fell in love with their fresh oysters, crab cakes
and fish and chips. After several visits we developed a craving
for the clam chowder, tuna melt, prime rib and turkey sandwiches
to name a few. We learned A.W. Shucks was originally Whitney’s Bar, established 1933 shortly after the prohibition and became A.W. Shucks in 1992 and is known for its vast selection of high-end spirits including
bourbon and scotch, which is played along the original solid oak bar which gives it a warm, inviting saloon-like feel and are a reminder of days past. Let’s not forget the beautiful, picturesque hand painted ocean mural on the walls. This mural over the years has become unmistakably recognizable and somewhat iconic background for many photos.
When A.W. Shucks became available, we jumped at the opportunity. With a mix of ambition, hard work, and a deep respect for the restaurant’s history, we’re proud to carry on the legacy of this beloved spot. We are honored to be a part of this amazing place while keeping the original recipes and only adding a few personal touches. We wish to continue to make A W Shucks a place where people from all over want to return time and time again. Come for a visit and perhaps stay for a lifetime of good food, laughter and memories.
